What is the International Students Cell (ISC) at Mumbai University?

The International Students Cell (ISC) is Mumbai University's dedicated office for foreign nationals, NRIs, PIOs, OCIs, and foreign residents. It handles the visa-linked documents international students need at the University of Mumbai and its 800+ affiliated colleges.

What visa support does Mumbai University offer?

Mumbai University, through its ISC, helps students with the following:

  • Visa application invitation letter: issued within 3-5 business days of your request.
  • Verification of documents against university records, including transcript validation.
  • Letter of undertaking for e-FRRO submission.
  • Detailed instructions for e-FRRO registration via the official e-FRRO Portal.

How long does Mumbai University take to issue a visa invitation letter?

3 to 5 business days, provided your admission is confirmed, your fees are paid, and your passport details on file match the spelling on your application.

3-5 Business days for the ISC to issue your visa invitation letter once admission is confirmed
14 Days after arrival in India to complete FRRO registration if your visa is valid beyond 180 days
6 Months minimum passport validity required beyond your course duration

What is the FRRO and why does it matter?

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is the government body under the Ministry of Home Affairs that registers and monitors foreign nationals in India.

If your student visa is valid for more than 180 days, you are legally required to register with the FRRO within 14 days of arrival in India. Mumbai University students fall under the FRRO Mumbai jurisdiction.

Registration is done online through the e-FRRO portal: a faceless, cashless, paperless system. You do not need to visit the FRRO office unless specifically called in. Once your registration is approved, the FRRO issues a Registration Certificate (RC) and Residential Permit (RP), which serve as proof of your lawful stay.

Tip: request the university-signed letter of undertaking from the ISC as soon as your admission is confirmed. It is required for your e-FRRO submission, and asking early keeps your 14-day registration window comfortable.

What documents will the ISC ask for before issuing your invitation letter?

Typically, ISC needs the following documents to issue your invitation letter:

  1. A scanned copy of your passport (bio-data page): minimum 6 months validity beyond your course duration.
  2. Provisional or final admission letter from Mumbai University.
  3. Proof of fee payment (eligibility fee, admission fee).
  4. Academic transcripts matching the name on your passport.
  5. Course start date confirmation.
