So you have looked at your options to study somewhere and you have decided that it’s going to be in the beautiful country, India! India is, after all, one of the best hubs for education. So what are the things you have to keep in mind when you are practically going to be a resident of the country for the next few years? Bear in mind that “visiting” somewhere and “living” somewhere are entirely different! So whatever you might have heard from people who have visited India, is going to be entirely different from what you are going to experience when you start living there. Here is a few things you should keep always remember so that your stay in India would be a smooth and one to remember: -

1:- Diversity

They say that India is a continent and not a country. This is very true when it comes to the diversity of the population of the country. If you are expecting to find a country with people who dress up, think and live in a similar manner, you are in for the shock of your life. India is one of the most diverse countries in the world in terms of culture and languages spoken. Be prepared to come across people who share very different cultures and ways of life.

2:- You are a foreigner

Do not be shocked or scared if the local people stare at you. This is common when they come across a foreign person. They are just curious and most of the time, do not mean any harm. Indians in general are very polite and helpful people.

2:- What to wear

Make sure that you dress modestly if you are going to be staying in a place which is not a big city, especially if you are a female. The traditional culture in such areas do not entertain women wearing clothes which are a bit exposing. It’s best to stick with the traditional clothes of the area. You will probably like it anyway because they are usually bright and colourful and different. In the big cities though, it is very much acceptable to wear modern clothes.

Locals are the best guide

Do not expect Google maps to give you accurate details about every nook and corner in the streets. Ask the locals for details about the inner streets and where they lead to.

Not the India that you have in your mind

If you have imagined India to be a place there are floating saints and snake whisperers, know that it is nothing like that. India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and its cities are as modern as they get. So any wrong assumptions about India is best kept to yourself so that you don’t insult anybody’s sentiments.

Learn to be organized in the middle of chaos

The crazy Indian traffic, jam-packed public transport and busy streets can fluster and frustrate you. Learn to start early and plan ahead so that you can get things done in time even amongst the chaos.

Familiarize yourself with the local places

you have some free time, take the effort to go and know and familiarize yourself with the neighborhood. It will help you make you feel more at home and comfortable with the new surroundings.

Culture shock

Be prepared for a culture shock. No matter how well you try to prepare for your stay in India in advance, you will have a culture shock. This is because India is unlike any other place in the world and it will get some getting used to. From the food to the people, try and absorb everything in patiently. If you keep these points in mind and keep yourself open to all the different positive experiences India has to offer, you will find it to be a wonderful place and you will cherish your tine there forever.
